Fitbit’s smartwatch: all of the news and rumors

It’s no secret that Fitbit is hard at work on its new smart wearable. And since its purchase of Pebble in 2016, expectations for what’s next from the popular fitness company have risen exponentially.

Looking back on its last effort, the Fitbit Blaze, fitness tech aficionados have clamored for something more. Something that continues to track the usual batch of workouts and activities, but does so while bringing along a unique batch of apps, quirky watchfaces and with a design that rivals premium smartwatches from the likes of Apple, LG, Samsung and more.

But will it deliver? It’s still a little too early to say with certainty, especially since reports suggest that the device has had a troubled development. However, Fitbit’s track record is solid, even if some of its recent devices haven’t really rocked the wearables world from an innovation perspective.

Here’s everything we know about Fitbit’s next smartwatch, including news and rumors.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? Fitbit’s sophomore smartwatch effort
  • When is it out? Reportedly delayed from Spring to an autumnal launch
  • How much will it cost? Realistically, anywhere from $199 to $299 (about £231)

Fitbit watch price and release date

We’ve known since the that Fitbit is working on a full-fat smartwatch, but we’ve only learned recently that its projected Spring launch target has instead stumbled into late 2017, closely aligning with whatever Apple has planned for its autumn event.

However, this reported delay hasn’t stopped us from thinking about .

But just how much could such a smartwatch cost you? Given that the Fitbit Blaze launched at $199 (about £153), then soon after worked down to where it is now, at about $149, there’s a slim, but ever-present possibility that the smartwatch will land for a similar price. It’s much more likely that it will be $50 or up to $100 above the cost of the Blaze, at most.

The Fitbit Blaze

Fitbit watch news and rumors

What we know to be true: Fitbit is currently working on a new smartwatch. Things we do not know: a lot of stuff about it, though this has changed of late.

Just recently, we might have gotten our first look at the Fitbit smartwatch, which is supposedly donned with the code name “Higgs”. What’s there to parse from a code name like that?

Credit: Yahoo Finance

Thankfully, the leaked render above gives us a pretty clear idea of how Fitbit’s next smart wearable may come together.

It’s rather easy to see how the Blaze and this Higgs render fall from the same tree. Many of its physical features look similar to that of the Blaze, but it’s all more refined looking around every corner.

We’ve heard reports that this wearable will feature swappable bands, a classic Fitbit move. In addition, sources say Fitbit’s upcoming smartwatch hosts a full color screen with 1,000 nits of brightness, an aluminum body and built-in GPS.

While it’s unclear how Fitbit’s smart, touch-based operating system has matured since the Blaze, there’s no question that its Pebble acquisition will likely result in a big improvement. At best, Higgs will be the most intuitive Fitbit model yet.

Additionally, the smartwatch is said to also allow mobile payment, music playback through Pandora, and, of course, heart-rate monitoring.

We’ll keep this section updated as more news, both confirmed and unconfirmed, comes through.

Facebook Starts Private Fundraiser Instruments To Aid Consumers Raise Income, Nevertheless Itis Rather Restricted For The Time Being: COMPUTER: Computer Times

Facebook is putting a GoFundMe clone to increase its selection of online fundraising resources, presenting help for individual fundraisers.

With individual fundraisers, Facebook desires to permit people to boost cash for your causes that subject many for them, whether or not they require finances for themselves, a buddy, a charity, or another thing.

“Whenever individuals muster round the causes they worry about, it generates a secure and helpful neighborhood,” says Facebook. “Your charitable giving resources have managed to get simple for visitors to boost huge amount of money for non-profits to guide these in need entirely on Facebook.”

for all those new to Facebookis exercise to the fundraiser landscape, the organization has produced many attempts sofar. In 2015, as an example, it presented a just like Kickstarter, enabling non-profits to create strategy websites, express their targets, and raise cash. The organization widened its fundraising resources a year ago to permit specific people to boost resources for charitable corporations.

These initiatives provided the best way to the most recent function – individual fundraisers – to permit specific people to boost cash for themselves or others even though the trigger isn’t associated with a non-profit or charity.

Windows 10 Creators Update Release Date Confirmed For April 11: Top Features To Expect : TECH : Tech Times

Microsoft has officially confirmed that the next major Windows update, known as Windows 10 Creators Update, will start rolling out on April 11 to customers worldwide.

Like with last year’s Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which rolled out in August, the Creators Update will see a throttled release that will likely stretch over a few months.

The update will arrive after several months of beta tests, leaks, and bits of information teasing new features, and will mark the second major update to Windows 10 since the OS launched back in July 2015.

Windows 10 Creators Update: Top Features To Expect

The Windows 10 Creators Update will bring a host of new features to the table, including notable changes to Microsoft’s Edge browser, more features for touch screen-enabled devices, enhancements for gaming on Windows 10, and more.

As the name itself suggests, the Creators Update will also feature new tools for users who make and consume media on their Windows 10 PC. Such tools include a new Paint3D app to add some cool new tricks to the classic drawing tool.

“[W]e want Windows to be the place you love to create and play, with the tools to help you make your mark on the world,” says Microsoft.

Paint 3D

The new Paint 3D app will be among the top features of the Creators Update, enabling users to capture 3D images on their phones and then edit and print them in 3D.

Microsoft points out that since we live in a multi-dimensional world, 2D tools no longer suffice and 3D allows users to better express themselves and communicate their ideas. At the same time, the company highlights that the 3D industry is estimated to surge by more than 62 percent by 2020 and the Windows 10 Creators Update will allow anyone to create, experience, and share in 3D.

The original Microsoft Paint has been among the world’s most popular creation tools with more than 100 million users per month, and the new Paint 3D aims to take things to the next level.

Mixed Reality

The upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update will also put a heavy focus on what Microsoft calls mixed reality, which aims to combine the physical and virtual worlds. A number of companies such as Asus, HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo will launch the first Windows mixed reality-enabled headsets with the Creators Update later this year. Designed with affordability in mind, these handsets will start at just $299.

Gaming Improvements

Microsoft wants to make Xbox the go-to place for gamers to create and play across Windows 10 and Xbox One, so it’s building a unified experience across consoles and PCs with Xbox Live and Xbox Play Anywhere. Gamers can purchase a game once and enjoy it on both their PC and Xbox One.

The update will bring Beam to the table, which will allow Creators to stream live gaming sessions to their Xbox Live friends straight into the Game DVR tool of Windows 10. At the same time, a new Game Mode will optimize the resources of your device to maximize gaming performance and reduce frame rate hiccups when you need more horsepower. Once enabled, Game Mode can work its magic on any game.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

Microsoft further boasts that its Edge browser is designed to be the best for Windows 10, as it’s safer than Google Chrome while delivering superior battery life. According to the company, Edge blocks 9 percent more phishing sites and 13 percent more malware than Chrome, and it’s also faster and more power-efficient.

With the Windows 10 Creators Update, Edge will get even better with new features such as advanced tab management, e-books, and more, touts Microsoft. Moreover, Edge is the only browser capable of playing Netflix content in 4K UHD.

Windows 10 Privacy And Security

Microsoft says that Windows 10 is the most secure enterprise platform, offering advanced protection against various risks such as malware, ransomware, and others.

The Creators Update will bring a new service called Windows Defender Security Center, aiming to make it easier to keep tabs on security. The service will offer a single dashboard for all security options so that users have everything in one place.

A new Device Health Advisor will offer details on the state of your device, while new settings will offer more control when it comes to installing applications. The Creators Update will also bring new tools and functionality to make IT simpler for business customers.

Lastly, Windows 10 privacy has been somewhat of a sore spot, but the Creators Update will make it easier to manage privacy settings in Windows 10 and other Microsoft services. A new privacy dashboard will allow for easy management across multiple Microsoft devices to handle privacy matters.

These are just the top highlights the Creators Update will boast, but there are a lot more features and improvements in the mix and they’ll start rolling out soon enough.

Got A Hangover? Yale Students Think They Have The Cure : HEALTH : Tech Times

Two Yale students have addressed the very common problem of hangovers and created a remedy based on the chemical reactions that take place in the human body when drinking.

The anti-hangover formula is called SunUp. The supplement is entirely natural and it comes in a powder form that consumers have to dissolve in water before drinking. It has a citrus taste, which makes it easier to administer. However, people should drink it before the crazy night out.

Scientific Hangover Remedy, With A Natural Formula

Margaret Morse, a molecular, cellular, and developmental biology Major at Yale and Liam McClintock, a D1 athlete involved in the Greek life at Yale are the scientists who developed the product.

The ingredients work together to break down toxic molecules in the liver, balancing the glutamine levels and arming the body with electrolytes. This all-in-one formula provides people who enjoy drinking with the necessary uplift to prevent a hangover.

According to the two creators of the hangover remedy, their efforts were divided into a two-step process. The first step involved learning about the physiological effects that alcohol has on the body and reading all of the scientific literature on what causes the symptoms of hangover. The second step was to find compounds and nutrients that have been proven effective in combatting processes that lead to hangovers.

“Although scientists are still trying to fully understand hangovers, there are four main contributors that have been identified by scientific research: acetaldehyde buildup, glutamine rebound, immunologic disturbances, and vitamin and electrolyte loss,” notes the researchers’ paper.

The students’ campaign is seeking $20,000 and has already secured $18,393 — more than 90 percent of the target fund. For a $5 pledge, every consumer will receive one packet of SunUp. The product will ship April 2017. Its ingredients have each been tested individually in independent studies, which prove their capability of improving alcohol clearance, as well as active defense against alcohol toxicity.

SunUp adds extra vitamins and electrolytes to the body, which eliminates the poignant feeling of fatigue that follows every night out. The product breaks down the acetaldehyde molecule, which is 30 times more toxic to the body than alcohol itself.

“We are passionate about ending hangovers and increasing productivity. This project aims to launch our patent-pending anti-hangover formula, making it available for retail with professional packaging and flavoring,” notes the Indiegogo page of the project.

Hangovers, Highly Expensive For The U.S.

Hangovers cost the United States approximately $223.5 in 2006, or approximately $1.9 per drink, according to data provided by the CDC.

The costs resulted from a different series of factors. The most important and expensive one is workplace productivity dropping because of excessive alcohol consumption, which accounted for 72 percent of the total cost.

Health care expenses were responsible for 11 percent of the total costs, while law enforcement and criminal justice expenses cost the American state 9 percent of the more than $223 billion. Last, but not least, motor vehicle crashes costs accounted for 6 percent of the total amount.

Additionally, binge drinking was reported by 18 percent of the adults in the United States.

Ancient Tracks Show Diversity Of Australia’s Dinosaurs During Cretaceous Period : SCIENCE : Tech Times

Paleontologists have revealed the discovery of the world’s biggest dinosaur footprint as well as the world’s most diverse collection of dinosaur tracks in Australia.

Giant Footprint Of Herbivorous Dinosaur Sauropod

The gigantic footprint belonged to a sauropod, an herbivorous dinosaur marked by its long neck, which likely measured 17 feet and 9 inches high at the hips. The track, which measures nearly 5 feet and 9 inches, is bigger than the previous record holder, which measured just nearly 3 feet and 9 inches.

The footprint is just one of a series of finds that scientists discovered in Australia’s “Jurassic Park.” Researchers also found 21 different dinosaur tracks and some rocks dating back from as early as 140 million years ago.

The footprints, which were between 140 million and 127 million years old, vary in size. They range from small, measuring about 8 inches, to very large, measuring over 5 feet in length.

Trace Fossils And Diversity Of Dinosaurs

The footprints are considered as trace fossils, left behind by animals but are not parts of the animals themselves.

The trace fossils revealed the diversity of dinosaurs that lived around the region during the Cretaceous period, the geologic period marked by relatively warm climate and an abundance of now-extinct marine reptiles, ammonites, and dinosaurs. The Cretaceous period ended with the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, in which some three-quarters of animals and plants on the planet died out.

Dinosaur Hotspot In Australia

Analyses showed five different track types of predatory dinosaurs, six track types of sauropods, four track types of herbivorous ornithopods, and six track types of armored dinosaurs.

Paleontologist Steve Salisbury from the University of Queensland said that the findings show that Broome, a town on Australia’s western coast, was once a dinosaur hot spot.

He said that the diversity of the tracks was unparalleled on a global level and made the area the “Cretaceous equivalent of the Serengeti.” Serengeti in Africa currently hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world. The region hosts about 70 large mammal and 500 bird species.

“The overall diversity of the dinosaurian ichnofauna of the Broome Sandstone in the Yanijarri-Lurujarri section of the Dampier Peninsula is unparalleled in Australia, and even globally,” the researchers wrote in their study, which was published on March 24 in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

“[T]his ichnofauna provides our only detailed glimpse of Australia’s dinosaurian fauna during the first half of the Early Cretaceous,” they added.

Tracks To Provide More Information About Iconic Prehistoric Animal

The tracks are not just fascinating. Scientists are also excited about the find since the dinosaur footprints can help them learn more about the anatomy, diversity, and evolution of the dinosaurs. Analyses of dinosaur bones allow scientists to study the iconic prehistoric animals, but footprints also offer an array of information about these large creatures.

“What stands out are [the footprints’] immense physical size and the great variety of dinosaur tracks found there,” said paleontologist Steve Brusatte from the University of Edinburgh. “Obviously, this part of Australia must have been a dinosaur stomping ground during the Early Cretaceous.”

New iPad is pretty much just an iPad Air – and just as difficult to DIY repair

Apple’s latest iPad launched this month with relatively little fanfare – a minor re-working of the iPad Air line (though dropping the ‘Air’ moniker). It’s a budget play by Apple, looking to attract attention with its $329 (£339, AU$469) asking price.

It’s a good job that the price is relatively affordable for an iPad then as, according to a new iFixit teardown, the new 9.7-inch iPad is all but identical to its original Air predecessor.

Aside from the addition of the Touch ID sensor (which uses the full button press style rather than the iPhone’s 3D Touch method), all that’s really changed is the removal of the mechanical lock, a solitary speaker grille row and smaller microphone holes.

Low repairability

iFixit also calls into question Apple’s claim that the new iPad has a “brighter” Retina display. It may be brighter than the Air 2, but not necessarily the first Air, with Apple “reverting to the unfused display design of the Air 1” according to iFixit.

As for overall repairability, the new iPad scores a lowly 2 out of 10 from the teardown specialists. Relying on loads of glue and adhesives, you stand a good chance of doing greater damage to the tablet than managing to fix it.

Still, in terms of bang for your buck, the new iPad still looks set to be a solid tablet. Keep an eye out for our full review in the coming days – but perhaps start considering one of those Apple Care plans in the meantime.

Sex-Shifting Parasitic Fish Chooses Gender Depending On Growth Rate, Study Says : SCIENCE : Tech Times

Sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) have gained a notorious reputation in the North American Great Lakes. Although considered an endangered species in their native territories – Europe and the Pacific Northwest – their presence inspires terror in U.S. waters, threatening local fish populations and the fishing industry.

These parasitic eel-like fish thrive at the expense of other aquatic creatures, which have come to fear their gaping jawless mouths. Equipped with razor-like teeth, they attack and kill other water inhabitants, latching onto their prey and sucking the blood out.

But that’s not all. Lampreys hide even more secrets in their deadly arsenal of evolutionary traits. According to a new study published on March 29 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the parasitic fish can change their gender depending on what their environment has to offer.

Peculiar Sex Determination Tactic

Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey and Michigan State University set out to investigate how environmental conditions affect growth rates in lampreys. What they discovered instead was utterly unexpected: These “vampire fish” (as they are sometimes called) become male or female as dictated by how much they grow in their larval stage.

This sex determination method is unprecedented in nature, making lampreys the first creatures to undergo sex change based on the resources in their environment. In mammals, sex is established at a chromosomal level, while in reptiles gender assignment is governed by the temperature of the eggs.

The international science journal Nature reports lamprey larvae start out with undifferentiated sexual organs, developing gonads within a year and metamorphosing into adult fish after several more years.

Scientists led by Nick Johnson, a USGS biologist, surveyed the creature’s habitats in the Great Lakes area, including their tributaries and nearby situated reservoirs, and – after making sure there were no wild lampreys in the study sites – released between 1,500 and 3,000 larvae to monitor their developmental process.

More Food Equals More Females

All larvae had been tagged beforehand and so it was easy for the team to recapture them after metamorphosis and observe their sex. The experiment showed the environments with poorer food resources led to slower growth rates in lamprey larvae, which increased their likelihood of becoming male, rather than female.

Such unproductive sites, where prey wasn’t abundant, resulted in a male lamprey population of 78 percent, whereas more plentiful environments only produced 56 percent males.

“We were startled when we discovered that these data may also reveal how sex is determined because mechanisms of sex determination in lamprey are considered a holy grail for researchers,” said Johnson.

He believes the explanation for this species’ gender assignment system lie within larval density, as well as food availability, since a nutrient-rich environment offers better conditions for the fish to produce eggs.

Pest Control Alternative

The newfound data could help establish new ways to keep the lamprey population in check. These invasive and destructive parasitic fish have taken a great toll on the Great Lakes’ ecosystem, decimating native aquatic fauna and disrupting the multibillion-dollar fisheries based in this area.

Previous efforts to curtail the species’ prevalence involved using pheromone bio pesticides to lure females into baiting sites and collect them before they get the chance to breed.

Even though sea lamprey numbers have been reduced by 90 percent, specialists call for even more innovative pest control strategies to protect American lakes from their predatory attacks.

“The results of this study could open paths forward to novel technologies that can disrupt or modify gender in sea lampreys,” said David Ullrich, chairman of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
